As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary life of a woman who left an indelible mark on the worlds of fashion, design, and beyond.

Born Iris Barrel in the vibrant borough of Astoria, Queens, New York City, on August 29, 1921, Iris was the cherished daughter of Samuel and Sadye Barrel.

Her father, Samuel, hailed from a family that owned a renowned glass and mirror business, while her mother, Sadye, was a Russian-born entrepreneur who owned a fashion boutique.

Raised in a loving household with her parents and grandparents on a farm, Iris’s upbringing was imbued with a spirit of creativity, entrepreneurship, and exploration.

Despite her rural surroundings, Iris’s fascination with the bustling metropolis of Manhattan began at a young age. She would often venture into the city, where she developed a deep affection for Greenwich Village.

It was there that her lifelong passion for fashion and design took root as she explored its eclectic antique shops and began her remarkable collection of jewelry from around the world.

Throughout her illustrious career, Iris Apfel’s influence extended far beyond the realms of fashion and design. Her fearless embrace of individuality and non-conformity served as a beacon of inspiration for generations of artists, designers, and creatives.

On March 1, 2024, Iris Apfel passed away peacefully at her home in Palm Beach, Florida, at the remarkable age of 102. While her physical presence may have left us, her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched and the enduring legacy she leaves behind.
