Alkis Papas was the ex-husband of Irene Papas, a Greek actress, politician and singer who starred in over 70 films in a career spanning more than five decades.

Alkis Papas, a film director and Irene (born Lelekou) got married in 1947. However, four years after getting married, they divorced over irreconcilable differences.
It’s not known whether the union between Alkis and Irene produced any children.

Sadly, the world of cinema is in mourning as Irene has died. She died on Wed. Sept. 14, 2022, at age 96, eleven days after cekebrating her 96th birthday.

Irene was discovered by Elia Kazan in Greece, where she achieved widespread fame.
Her first film work was a small part in Nikos Tsiforos’s 1948 Fallen Angels (Greek, “Hamenoi angeloi”) after which she went on to star in globally acclaimed movies such as;
- The Guns of Navarone (1961),
- Zorba the Greek (1964) and
- Z (1969).
She also starred as as powerful protagonist in films including The Trojan Women (1971) and Iphigenia (1977) and played the title roles in Antigone (1961) and Electra (1962).
