Her lineage is rooted in a Swedish father, Justus Samuel Bergman, and his German wife, Frieda “Friedel” Henriette Auguste Louise Bergman. The union of Justus and Frieda commenced in Hamburg on June 13, 1907, laying the foundation for Ingrid’s diverse cultural background.

At the tender age of two and a half, her mother, Frieda, passed away. Left as an only child, Bergman’s father, Justus, harbored aspirations for her to become an opera star. He enrolled her in voice lessons for three years and sent her to the Palmgrenska Samskolan, a prestigious girls’ school in Stockholm.

Justus Bergman, a passionate photographer, captured his daughter’s life through his lens, making her a frequent subject of his photographs. Bergman’s childhood memories were intertwined with dancing, dressing up, and performing in front of her father’s camera.

In 1929, tragedy struck again when Justus Bergman succumbed to stomach cancer, leaving the teenage Ingrid without both parents. Following her father’s death, Ingrid Bergman found herself under the care of her paternal aunt, Ellen, who tragically passed away from heart disease just six months later.

Subsequently, she lived with her paternal uncle Otto and his wife Hulda, who had five children of their own. Additionally, she sought solace with her maternal aunt, Elsa Adler, affectionately known as “Mutti” (Mom).

In the midst of these transitions, Bergman’s passion for acting took root. She expressed her desire to become an actress, often donning her deceased mother’s clothing and staging plays in her father’s empty studio. The loss of her parents at such a young age left an indelible mark, described by Bergman as “living with an ache,” a sentiment she wasn’t even aware of during those formative years.
