Idris Elba reshaping Africa with Sierra Leone smart city initiative

Idris Elba, the renowned film star, is spearheading the development of a smart city in Sierra Leone with a mission to challenge stereotypes about Africa. Collaborating with Siaka Stevens, the grandson of Sierra Leone’s former president who shares his name, and partnering with Octopus Energy Generation, they are creating an eco-city on Sherbro Island off West Africa’s coast.

The innovative city will feature a wind and solar farm to provide sustainable power to residents in a country where less than a third of homes have electricity.

Elba’s vision goes beyond profit, focusing on self-reliance and economic growth that nurtures itself.

By reshaping Africa’s narrative away from aid dependency, Elba aims to attract business, foster innovation, cater to tourists, and empower local communities through this transformative project.

Additionally, he plans to establish a film studio and a retirement home for his Ghanaian mother on the island, honoring his Sierra Leonean heritage and creating opportunities for sustainable development and cultural enrichment.
