Roy Mitchell, his uncle, was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1989 and played professional hockey for 12 seasons. While Roy is currently living in the United States, he has remained a source of advice for Ian as he begins his professional career.

Ian Mitchell played college hockey for the University of Denver Pioneers before signing with the Chicago Blackhawks, who drafted him in the second round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Blackhawks during the 2020-2021 season.
Ian Mitchell currently plays as a defenseman for the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League. On January 22, 2023, Mitchell scored his first goal of the 2022-2023 season against the Los Angeles Kings. Mitchell was traded by the Blackhawks to the Boston Bruins on June 26, 2023, along with Alec Regula, for Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno.
