His death, on March 25, 2024, marks the end of a prolific career that spanned nearly half a century.
Heads’ passion for sports journalism was evident from the outset, as he began his career as a copy boy at The Daily Telegraph in the early 1960s.
However, it was his deep love for rugby league that became his hallmark. He served as the editor of Rugby League Week magazine for many years, where he showcased his unparalleled dedication to covering the sport.
Throughout his illustrious career, Heads emerged as one of the most respected rugby league journalists, authors, and historians of his time.
His profound connection to the game, particularly with the Rabbitohs, endeared him to fans and players alike.

As Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly noted, Heads played a significant role in chronicling the rich history of the club through his numerous books and articles.
“Ian Heads holds a special place in our Club’s history,” said Solly. “He was always helpful to our Club when we needed him and penned special written pieces for us over the decades.”
Last year, Heads received a fitting tribute for his outstanding contributions to rugby league journalism when he was inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame alongside the game’s greatest players.
Heads is survived by his wife, Joy, his son Phil, his daughter Katherine, and four granddaughters.
