Hughie is the first cousin of Tyson Fury and also the cousin of heavyweight boxer Nathan Gorman.
As an amateur he represented England at the 2012 Youth World Championships, winning a gold medal in the super-heavyweight division and becoming the first British boxer to do so.

At age 23, he challenged once for the WBO heavyweight title in 2017 and at national level held the British heavyweight title in 2018.
On March 22, 2019, Fury vacated the British heavyweight title citing injury. This came after Fury was ordered to fight mandatory challenger Joe Joyce in October 2018. However, he made a come back that same year.
