Hugh Russell earned a medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow and, after turning pro, won the British bantamweight and flyweight titles.
After quitting the sport in 1985, he went on to establish himself as a well-known character in Northern Ireland Press circles as a skilled photographer with the Irish News.

Russell earned another bronze medal at the Olympics when fellow hopeful Barry McGuigan’s ambitions were dashed early. He was only 20 years old when he competed in the Moscow Games following Northern Ireland’s bronze medal victory at the 1978 Commonwealth Games.

He began working for Belfast-based promoter Barney Eastwood, who at the time was also representing rising star McGuigan among his boxers. Russell worked for the British Boxing Board of Control as a professional referee when he hung up his boxing gloves.
