How Strong Was Gama Pehlwan?

Gema Pehlwan, also known as the undefeated wrestler, was so strong that he lifted a 1,200-kg stone as far back as 1902.

The heavyweighted stone can be found at the Baroda Museum.

The great Gama was 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed 110kg.

Gama was born on May 22nd, 1878 in Punjab, India, into a family of wrestlers.

Gama was known to carry out 500 lunges (bethaks) and 500 push-ups on a daily basis.

Gama came into limelight at the age of ten, following a strongman competition that included energy exerting exercises such as squats.

The contest had over 400 wrestlers in attendance and Gama came tops. His achievement at that young age earned him a training by the Maharaja of Datia.

When Gama was 17 years old, he faced then-Indian Wrestling Champion, Raheem Bakhsh Sultani Wala, who was about 7 feet tall.

The match was expected to end with a win on the part of Raheem, but it eventually ended in a draw.

Gama died in Lahore, on May 23, 1960. He was aged 82.
