Sir James Arthur Ratcliffe was born on October 18, 1952, in Failsworth, Lancashire, the United Kingdom as the son of a joiner and a mother who worked as an accounts office worker. He relocated to East Yorkshire alongside her family at the age of 10.
Jim Ratcliffe attended Beverley Grammar School. He later graduated from the University of Birmingham with a degree in chemical engineering in 1974. He was granted an honorary fellowship by the Institution of Chemical Engineers in May 2009 and also received the Petrochemical Heritage Award in 2013.

Jim Ratcliffe founded the Ineos chemicals group, in 1998 and is presently serving as the chairman and chief executive officer (CEO).
