NATO’s main headquarters are located in Brussels, Belgium, while NATO’s military headquarters are near Mons, Belgium. The combined militaries of all NATO members include around 3.5 million soldiers and personnel.

According to the Global Firepower Index, the United States has the strongest military force in NATO, with a Power Index score of 0.0712. However, it’s worth noting that military strength is not solely based on the number of personnel in each country’s military.

The Global Firepower Index uses over 60 factors to determine a given nation’s Power Index score, including factors such as geography, natural resources, and economic strength.

As for whether a country can exit NATO, the answer is yes. Article 13 of the North Atlantic Treaty outlines the process for a country to withdraw from NATO. A country that wants to leave must send the United States (as the depositary state) a “notice of denunciation,” which the U.S. would then pass on to the other Allies.

After a one-year waiting period, the country that wants to leave would be out.  During the Cold War, NATO operated as a check on the threat posed by the Soviet Union.

The alliance remained in place after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact and has been involved in military operations in the Balkans, the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa.
