Sal Bando died at the age of 78 on Friday, January 20, 2023, in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. According to his family, he had been battling cancer for the previous five years.

He is best known for his eleven seasons with the Oakland Athletics, where he rose to prominence as the captain of the dynasty that won three consecutive World Series championships from 1972 to 1974.

Sal Bando was drafted in the sixth round of the 1965 Major League Baseball (MLB) draught by the Kansas City Athletics.

In 1966, he made his MLB debut for the Athletics. On May 30, 1969, manager Hank Bauer named Bando team captain.

Sal Bando was named to three consecutive MLB All-Star Games (1972-1974) and led the American League with 64 extra-base hits, 32 doubles, and 295 total bases in the 1973 season during the “Swingin’ A’s” era. He retired after the 1981 season.
