Bison Dele’s death was a tragedy that shocked the world of basketball and left many of his fans and loved ones in mourning.

His disappearance and presumed death occurred in July of 2002 while he was on a sailing trip in the South Pacific with his girlfriend, Serena Karlan, and his brother, Miles Dabord.

On July 8, 2002, the group set sail from Tahiti on Dele’s yacht, the Hakuna Matata. The yacht was later found off the coast of Tahiti, abandoned and partially sunk.

Dele, Karlan, and Dabord were nowhere to be found. After an extensive search, the Coast Guard was unable to locate any of the passengers or determine the cause of the yacht’s abandonment.

In the weeks and months that followed, rumours and speculation swirled about what had happened to Dele and his companions. Eventually, Dabord was discovered in Phoenix, Arizona, and was arrested on charges of using Dele’s credit cards and stealing his identity.

In 2003, Dabord was charged with the murder of Dele, Karlan, and the yacht’s captain, Bertrand Saldo. However, he never stood trial for those charges because he died by suicide in 2008 while being held in a jail in Arizona.
