Garry Emmanuel Shandling was born on November 29, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He was raised in a Jewish family in Chicago alongside his older brother Barry Shandling. His father Muriel Estelle Singer was a pet store proprietor while his mother Irving Shandling print shop owner.
Garry Shandling was brought up in the Casa Loma Estates, Tucson, Arizona. He lost his older brother Barry to cystic fibrosis when he was 10. Garry Shandling graduated from Palo Verde High School and proceeded to the University of Arizona where he majored in marketing. He had his graduate studies in creative writing.

Garry Shandling initially became a frequent guest host on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson after a successful stand-up performance. He has been nominated for 19 Primetime Emmy Awards as well as two Golden Globe Awards.
Garry Shandling is the author of Confessions of a Late-night Talk-show Host: The Autobiography of Larry Sanders. He has appeared in Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Garry has hosted the Grammy Awards four times and the Emmy Awards three times.
