Born in Portland, Oregon, Udoka graduated from Jefferson High School in Portland.

Udoka played for Utah State University Eastern and the University of San Francisco before transferring to Portland State University where he played for the Vikings.

He represented the Nigeria national team amid his playing career.

Udoka took over as a Celtics coach after working nine years as an assistant coach.
