Herbert Jeffrey Hancock was born on April 12, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, the United States in Chicago to parents, Winnie Belle Griffin and Wayman Edward Hancock. His mother Winnie is a secretary while his father Wayman worked as a government meat inspector.

Herbie Hancock attended Hyde Park High School and studied classical music from age seven. Herbie graduated from Grinnell College in 1960 with degrees in electrical engineering and music. He has also taken courses at Roosevelt University and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree in 1972. He later studied composition with Vittorio Giannini for a brief period in 1960.

Herbie Hancock started his career with trumpeter Donald Byrd’s group and recorded his first solo album Takin’ Off for Blue Note Records in 1962. His 2007 Joni Mitchell tribute album River: The Joni Letters won him the 2008 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, making history as the second jazz album to win the award after Getz/Gilberto in 1965.

Herbie Hancock is the chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz and has been a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, teaching at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music since 2012.
