Anthony was born in the Red Hook housing projects in Brooklyn, New York City, to parents of Puerto Rican, African, Spanish, and indigenous origin, and his mother, Mary Anthony, is African-American. Anthony’s father died when he was two years old, and his family relocated to Baltimore when he was eight years old.

Anthony spent the first three years of high school at Towson Catholic High School. During his junior year, he rose to prominence as one of the area’s top players, earning numerous honors. Despite problems such as academic difficulties and physical fitness for the NBA, Anthony decided to declare for the draft early.

However, he sought to improve his academic performance and transferred to Oak Hill Academy for his senior year. He continued to succeed in basketball, competing in tournaments and All-Star games and cementing his status as one of the best high school players in the country.

Despite his reservations about attending college, Anthony eventually obtained the required ACT score and committed to Syracuse University.
