Born on May 11, 1988, in Halifax Regional Municipality, Canada, to parents who were hockey coaches, Brad began playing ice hockey at an early age.
His amateur career began in 2004 with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, who drafted him as 24th overall pick in 2004 entry draft.

In 2006, Brad was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the third round, as 71st overall pick, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
As of 2008, Brad had played for three junior ice hockey teams – the Moncton Wildcats, the Val-d’Or Foreurs, and the Halifax Mooseheads.
During the 2017–2018 NHL season, Brad suffered a series of fines, suspensions, and media trolls for hitting his opponents.
In 2011, Brad re-signed a two-year deal with the Bruins, scoring 28 goals and 55 points.
Brad continued to play with the Bruins amidst contract extensions, injuries and suspensions.
After an injury recovery period in 2022, Brad scored 2 goals and one assist during a game matched against the Detroit Red Wings.
