Brothers Albert and Michel Roux were born in Burgundy in 1935 and 1941 respectively. Albert began his career as a private chef for Nancy Astor at Cliveden, while Michel worked as a pastry chef in Paris before accompanying Albert to London.

In 1967, the brothers created Le Gavroche, the first British restaurant to gain three Michelin stars, a record equalled by The Waterside Inn, which they launched in 1972. The Roux Scholarship, founded in 1984 to provide a platform for brilliant young cooks, is their most lasting legacy.
