Joan Lunden was born to Gladyce Lorraine and Dr Erle Murray Blunden in Sacramento County. She received a Liberal Arts degree from California State University, Sacramento and later studied Spanish and anthropology at Universidad de Las Americas in Mexico City.

Joan Lunden joined GMA as a feature news/consumer reporter and eventually became the fill-in co-host when former co-host Sandy Hill left to work on ABC’s coverage of the 1976 Winter Olympics.
