Snooker is a cue sport that was invented in the second half of the nineteenth century by British Army officers stationed in India. It is played on a rectangular table covered in a green cloth known as baize, with six pockets, one at each corner and one in the centre of each long side.

The game is played with twenty-two balls: a cue ball, fifteen red balls, and six other balls called the colours yellow, green, brown, blue, pink, and black.
A frame is a single game of snooker. Matches in the first round of a snooker tournament are played over eleven frames. The first player to win six frames wins the match.

Matches are played over 15 frames in the later rounds. Assume that each player maintains calm nerves and that his chances of winning any frame regardless of who starts are constant.
The number of frames is determined by the round of the game. The games between round 2 and the quarter-finals are best of 25 points, and the semi-finals are best of 33 points. The final has the most frames, with it being the best of 35.
