Russia presently has seven cruisers, one of which (the Kirov-class battlecruiser Admiral Lazarev) is afloat but has been inactive for years, while another (the Kirov-class battlecruiser Admiral Ushakov) is only nominally in service and has not been at sea since 1991.

Ukraine owns the fourth Slava class (Slava-class Admiral Lobov), which is still under construction at its shipyard.

The Kirov class cruisers are the world’s largest cruisers, and as a result, they are commonly referred to as battlecruisers. The RFS Admiral Nakhimov and RFS Pyotr Velikiy, both Kirov battlecruisers, are currently in service.

Kirov class battlecruisers are fully capable to combat a wide range of sea, undersea, air, and land-based adversary targets, and are equipped with a significant number of weaponry systems as well as sophisticated electrical technology.

The Slava class was created as a less radical alternative to the aforementioned Kirovs, incorporating most of the larger ship’s features into a much smaller, gas turbine-powered hull. The Slava class was created as part of a new concept for building ballistic missile submarine bastions.

The Russian Navy classifies Kuznetsov class aircraft carriers as large aircraft-carrying cruisers since their main striking weapon is long-range anti-ship cruise missiles and their air wing is designed for defensive operations. A UDAV-1 integrated anti-submarine system with 60 anti-submarine missiles is also installed on the ship.
