Sarah Baartman was a Khoikhoi woman who was displayed in 19th-century Europe as a freak show attraction under the moniker Hottentot Venus, a term that was later attributed to at least one other woman who was similarly exhibited.

The indigenous Khoekoe (previously known as Khoikhoi) people of southwestern Africa were known as “Hottentots” during colonial times.
The women were displayed because of their steatopygic body type, which was unusual in Western Europe at the time and was not only seen as a curiosity but also became a subject of scientific research, albeit with racist bias and erotic projection.

How many children did Sarah Baartman have?
There is proof that she had two children, both of whom died as infants. She had a connection with Hendrik van Jong, a poor Dutch soldier from Hout Bay in Cape Town, but it ended when his army departed the Cape.
