Who Was George Halas?

George Halas Sr., affectionately known as “Papa Bear” and “Mr. Everything,” left an indelible mark on American sports history.

Born on February 2, 1895, Halas was a multifaceted sports figure, excelling as a player, coach, and team owner.

Halas co-founded the American Professional Football Association, which later became the NFL, in 1920.

He was a pioneer, establishing the Chicago Bears and serving as his own head coach on four separate occasions. His contributions earned him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.

As a player, Halas showcased his skills with the Hammond All-Stars and later with the Decatur/Chicago Staleys/Bears. His coaching career spanned several decades, with remarkable stints from 1920 to 1929, 1933 to 1942, 1946 to 1955, and 1958 to 1967. He was also an influential executive in football and briefly ventured into baseball as an owner.

Halas’s legacy includes 8 NFL championships, 2 AP NFL Coach of the Year awards, a well-deserved place among the “100 greatest Bears of All-Time, and many more accolades.” He coached his final game at the age of 72, leaving an enduring record that stood for over 50 years.

He was the last surviving participant of the historic meeting that birthed the NFL in 1920.
