Sum 41 exemplified the carefree, fast-living lifestyle expected of punk rockers for years, singing about drinking and partying.

However, in April 2014, frontman Deryck Whibley’s lifestyle caught up with him, and he collapsed in his kitchen when his liver and kidneys failed after a night of heavy drinking.
Whibley, then 34, was hospitalised and put in a coma for three days. He detoxed for a month at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Deryck was virtually unable to stand for months thereafter owing to nerve damage in his feet, and he tells TeamRock that there were times when he didn’t think he’d be able to record another album.
Deryck said in an interview that “The first thing I noticed was my mother standing there, and I immediately thought to myself, ‘OK, this is awful.’ My mother resides in Toronto, and I’m in the hospital, so I figured it had to be something to do with drinking. And after a few days of getting back to normal, it was a simple decision to say, ‘OK, I’m done with that nonsense.’
