The MTV Movie Awards was a virtual pre-recorded ceremony because of the WGA strike and the quitting of the show’s host at the last minute.
About The MTV Movie & TV Awards 2023
The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards was scheduled to be held on May 7, 2023 at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, United States.
However, the show was eventually changed to a broadcast-only virtual ceremony due to the strike of the Writers Guild of America (WGA).

It was the show’s 31st edition and was supposed to be hosted by Drew Barrymore, who pulled out a day before, because of the WGA strike.

Award winners at the virtual ceremony could only make pre-recorded acceptance speeches, instead of a live recording because of Barrymore’s decision to step down as host.
“As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create,” the show’s executive producer Bruce Gillmer had said in a statement.
“We are pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peaks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year”, Gillmer added.
