Navalny was produced by HBO Max and CNN Films and it premiered on 25 January 2022 at the Sundance Film Festival.
Project Navalny was first announced on 13 January 2022 and was was directed by Canadian documentary filmmaker Daniel Roher, who originally planned to make a film about one of the investigations of Christo Grozev.
Filming began shortly after Alexey Navalny came out of a coma and went on until his arrest in January 2021: according to the main character of the film, the film crew was next to him even at the border control at the airport.

Navalny premiered on 25 January 2022 at the Sundance Film Festival as the final title in the U.S. Documentary Competition section, where it won the Festival Favorite Award and the Audience Award for the U.S. Documentary Competition.
Warner Bros. Pictures acquired U.S. distribution rights to the film in March 2022, and set it for an April 11, and April 12, 2022, release.
Navalny is scheduled to premiere on 24 April 2022 on CNN in the US, as well as on the streaming platform CNN+ and will begin streaming on HBO Max on May 26, 2022.
Navalny’s running time is 2h 10m.
