How long has Jim Boeheim coached Syracuse?

Jim Boeheim is an American former college basketball coach who was the head coach of the Syracuse Orange men’s team of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) for 47 years.

Jim Boeheim was the head coach of the Syracuse college basketball team from 1976 until March 2023.

Boeheim enrolled at Syracuse as a walk-on for the basketball team in 1962. By his senior year, Boeheim was a team captain alongside the legendary Dave Bing.

In 1969, was hired as a graduate assistant at SU by head coach Roy Danforth. He was named head coach at his alma mater in 1976.

In his first 41 years as Syracuse’s head coach, Boeheim led the Orange to postseason berths, either in the NCAA or NIT tournaments, in every year the Orange were eligible.

Syracuse has only missed the postseason once, in 1993, when NCAA sanctions prevented them from participating despite a 20-9 record.

During his tenure, the Orange appeared in three NCAA national championship games (1987, 1996, and 2003), winning the national championship in 2003.

Boeheim’s coaching style at Syracuse is unique in that, while many highly successful coaches prefer man-to-man defence, Boeheim prefers the match-up 2-3 zone.

Jim Boeheim received Syracuse University’s Arents Award, the university’s highest alumni honour, in the fall of 2004.
