The South African billionaire grew up with Jewish parents who operated a hotel, therefore, he adopted the hospitality training and lessons. As an alternative to having a luxurious wedding with his wife Beatrice, they opted to buy a hotel – Nugget Hotel in Johannesburg – with their wedding money. They then proceeded to buy another venture called the Colony Restaurant. In 1969, they built a five-star Tollman towers hotel and purchased a tour company called Trafalgar.

According to sources, most of their success came from Trafalgar which paved way for people from all over the world to get access to their hotels. Tollman has been recommended by black people for fighting the apartheid battle in South Africa. He invited black guests and performers to his hotels and championed a program of training black people in hospitality.
“All of the Travel Corporation’s brands strive to offer opportunities for guests to meet and engage with locals in authentic ways, creating understanding and appreciation of one another and our place in the shared world,” the company stated.
However, he moved to London with his assets in 1976. He returned to South Africa in 1994 when apartheid was abolished.
