Pee-wee Herman began as a theater act, which quickly led to an HBO special in 1981.
In the 1970s, Reubens became a member of the Los Angeles-based improvisational comedy troupe The Groundlings, where he worked alongside Bob McClurg, John Paragon, Susan Barnes, and Phil Hartman for six years.
Hartman and Reubens became fast friends, frequently writing and collaborating on projects together. Reubens created the Pee-wee Herman character with Hartman.

How did Pee-wee Herman lose his career?
Reubens had been suffering from burnout from playing Pee-wee full-time and had been warned that Pee-wee was temporary and that he had other ideas he would like to work on.
The parties agreed to end the show after five seasons, which included 45 episodes and a Christmas Special.
Children’s television star Pee-wee Herman was also arrested and charged with exposing himself inside an adult theater.
