The sad news of Ryder’s death was announced on the group’s official Facebook page.

The statement read:

The Ryder family and Happy Mondays band members are deeply saddened and shocked to say that Paul Ryder passed away this morning. A true pioneer and legend.

He will be forever missed.

We thank you for respecting the privacy of all concerned at this time.

Paul’s bandmates included his brother Shaun Ryder, Gary Whelan, Mark “Bez” Berry, Paul Davies and Mark Day.

It was during his tenure with the band that it had its biggest successes with albums such as Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches which sold more than 350,000 copies in the UK
