Dame Julie Andrews DBE is an actress, singer, and author from England. During the two years, she was starring in the Broadway musical version of Victor/Victoria, she developed vocal problems and was diagnosed with a lesion on her vocal cords

Andrews had her vocal cords operated on at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Unfortunately, Andrews’ operation left her with scarred vocal cords.

Andrews attempted to reclaim her voice with vocal exercises following her 1997 surgery. A different doctor, Steven Zeitels, was able to remove some scar tissue and stretch some of Andrews’ remaining vocal tissue to improve flexibility throughout multiple surgeries. Her speaking voice improved as a result of her efforts.

However, Zeitels discovered that so much of Andrews’ vocal cord tissue had been removed that it was impossible to restore her singing voice.

And, as Andrews stated in 2015, “it’s not going to grow back.” Her vocal range was limited to about an octave — she can sing low notes, but not middle notes, and her high notes are uncertain.
