Actress Jean Smart and her late husband Richard Gilliland, met on the set of the 1986 CBS sitcom, Designing Women.

The couple later tied the knots in 1987, and their union was blessed with a son and a daughter.
Gilliland, during his career, started in Party of Five, Thirtysomething, Matlock, and the season five of 24, where he played Captain Stan Cotter.
Smart had said at a time that Gilliland was able to balance up his work life with family perfectly.
Gilliland later passed on after falling ill briefly in March 2021.

Smart on her own has appeared in several movies such as The Brady Bunch Movie (1995), Sweet Home Alabama (2002), Garden State (2004), I Heart Huckabees (2004), Youth in Revolt (2009), The Accountant (2016), and A Simple Favor (2018).
In 2021, Smart starred in the HBO Max dark comedy series Hacks (2021).
The movie which she played at age 69, garnered a number of positive reviews and made her earn the title, “The Queen of HBO”.
