French Illustrator and cartoonist, Jean-Jacques Sempé’s cause of death has not yet been announced, his wife Martine Sempe reported his death but did not state how he died. Some sources believe that he died as a result of natural causes.

Jean-Jacques Sempé was a popular cartoonist who got the inspiration to be a cartoonist due to a traumatic childhood experience. He once shared that he was heavily maltreated almost everywhere he stayed during childhood, therefore, most of his stories were based on such experience.

“The Nicolas stories were a way to revisit the misery I endured while growing up while making sure everything out just fine,” he said in a 2018 interview.
He started making art to sell to newspapers to make a living as a young man and along the line, became friends with French comic editor and writer, Rene Goscinny. They then came together to invent what became a world-class children’s book series the “Little Nicolas” series.
