How did Hanneli Goslar survive he Holocausts?

Hannah Goslar was a Holocaust survivor and German-born Israeli nurse.

Hannah, her father, her maternal grandparents, and Hannah’s younger sister Gabrielle (“Gabi”) were arrested in June 1943 and detained at the Westerbork transit camp before being transferred to the Bergen-Belsen exchange camp in February 1944.

Hannah was in a special section of the camp because her family was carrying Paraguayan passports. Nazi officials ordered the evacuation of Bergen-Belsen in April 1945. Prisoners are compelled to board trains.

They are trapped in the train for ten days with no air, food, or water. Hanneli is unconscious for several days.

Hanneli woke up on the tenth day to find Germans holding white flags. The German government had given up. The war had ended. Only Hanneli and her sister survived out of her family of six.

Hanneli was admitted to a hospital in July 1945 because her lungs are infected. Otto Frank paid a visit to Hanneli in the hospital in the fall of 1945. She learned that Anne had passed away.

Following a period of recuperation in Switzerland, she immigrated to Israel in 1947 and enrolled in nursing studies at the Bikur Holim hospital in Jerusalem.

Hannah Goslar dedicated her life to fighting antisemitism and telling the story of her and her friend Frank’s lives.

Hannah Goslar died on Friday, October 28, 2022, at the age of 93, according to the Anne Frank Foundation.
