Gino Cappelletti died at his home in Wellesley, Massachusetts on Thursday, May 13th. The New England Patriots announced his death on Thursday. There was no mention of a cause of death. He was 89.

“It breaks my heart to learn about Gino Cappelletti’s death this morning. Gino was an all-star player, assistant coach, and broadcaster for the first 51 years of this franchise’s existence. “You couldn’t be a Patriots fan at that era without liking Gino’s,” Patriots owner Robert Kraft said in a statement. “As good as he was as a player, he was even greater as a person and storyteller.”

Cappelletti was a former AFL Most Valuable Player and a founding member of the Boston Patriots who spent five decades with the team as a player, coach, and commentator. He spent his entire career with Boston from 1960 to 1970, finishing as the AFL’s all-time leader in points (1,100) and field goals (170).

In 1992, he joined guard John Hannah as the second Patriots player to be inducted into the team’s hall of fame. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, daughters Gina, Cara and Christina, and 10 grandchildren
