Damon Albarn was born in London, England. He spent his early years in the East End before moving with his family to Colchester, Essex, in 1978.

As a youth, Damon Albarn learned to play the violin and the piano, and in secondary school, he befriended Graham Coxon, with whom he soon began to write and perform songs. Damon Albarn is a vegetarian.

Damon Albarn was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2016 New Year Honours for services to music. Albarn released Mali Music in 2002 and an EP, Democrazy in 2003.

Damon Albarn starred in Antonia Bird’s 1997 film Face alongside Ray Winstone and Robert Carlyle. Albarn was also featured in Gunar Karlsson’s 2007 film, Anna and the Moods, and later played “Bull” in Joe Orton’s radio play Up Against It.

In 2016, Damon Albarn received the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors. In 2014, Albarn contributed the song “Sister Rust” to the soundtrack of the science fiction film Lucy.
