Aung San Suu Kyi AC is a Burmese politician, diplomat, and author. Aung San Suu Kyi was instrumental in Myanmar’s transition from a military junta to partial democracy in the 2010s.

Aung San Suu Kyi served as Myanmar’s State Counsellor and Foreign Minister from 2016 to 2021.
When she became state counsellor, Aung San Suu Kyi faced criticism from a number of countries, organisations, and individuals for Myanmar’s inaction in response to the genocide of the Rohingya people in Rakhine State.
Aung San Suu Kyi testified before the International Court of Justice in 2019 to defend the Burmese military against allegations of genocide against the Rohingya.

Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested on 1 February 2021 following a coup that restored the Tatmadaw, Myanmar Armed Forces to power and sparked nationwide protests.
Several charges were filed against her, and she was sentenced to four years in prison on two of them on December 6, 2021.
Later, on 10 January 2022, she was sentenced to four years in prison on new charges. By October 12, 2022, she had been sentenced to 26 years in prison on ten charges, including five counts of corruption.
