How Did Alex Scherzer Die?

In the early summer of 2012, Alex Scherzer, the younger brother of American professional baseball pitcher Max Scherzer, died by suicide. Alex died as a result of strangulation in their parent’s basement.

Alex Scherzer suffered from depression.  Max Scherzer refused to speak publicly about his brother when he died. “I’m not sure words can express how we feel. It’s extremely difficult.

“We’ll talk about it, but it’ll be difficult for both of us. We’re going through it together. Everybody is.”

Max was into sports. Alex, the math whiz, had his books. And, thanks to McGwire’s home runs, they became closer than they had ever been in their young lives.

Max and Alex shared this enthusiasm every day, watching McGwire close in on Maris’ record and desperately hoping McGwire would break it.

Scherzer has dedicated every start since Alex’s death to his late brother. Max named his first son after his brother.
