Horst Hülß was a German football player and manager who played midfielder. Hülß, born in Upper Franconia, switched from FC Viktoria Koln to Rheinhessen in1965 and played there in the regional league until 1968.

After the end of his career as an active player, he developed into one of the most influential figures in the regional football scene. He coached more than 12 clubs in the Rhine-Main area.

Horst Hülß has now died at the age of 84. Bundesliga soccer clun 1. FSV Mainz 05 mourns the loss of its former coach and player.

“This news makes us very sad, it’s a very big loss for us. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and companions,” said club and board chairman Stefan Hofmann in a press release.
He is an icon at Mainz 05 because he significantly influenced the sporting development of the club in the 1960s and 1970s and was always a close companion and a face of the club even after his contract period.
