Holding Carter III was the father of four children, Hodding Carter IV, Catherine Carter Sullivan, Margaret Carter and Finn Carter.

His son Hodding Carter, IV is an author who has written for Esquire and M magazines. His books are nonfiction works.

He and his wife lived in West Virginia, where he worked as a whitewater raft guide, was a member of the New River Gorge City Council, and served as postmaster.

Hodding Carter III’s daughter Finn is a former actress. Her most well-known role was in the 1990 film Tremors, alongside Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward.

Hodding Carter III died on May 11, 2023, at the age of 88, at a retirement home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, from a series of strokes.
