A mass shooting occurred during an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Illinois, on July 4, 2022.

The shooting started at 10:14 a.m. The shooter fired a rifle from the rooftop of the Ross Cosmetics building, a local store on the northwest corner of Central Avenue and 2nd Street, in downtown Highland Park.

When the shooter opened fire, the parade had not yet arrived at the intersection. Victims included spectators and some parade participants.

The shooting killed six people and injured 36 others. Five of the deceased victims died at the scene, while another died in the hospital after suffering injuries.

Two of those killed were identified as a 73-year-old Mexican man visiting family in the area and a female synagogue congregant.

Twenty-five of the injured were shot, while 11 others were injured during the panicked stampede evacuation of the parade route.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office named 21-year-old Robert Eugene Crimo III as a person of interest in the case, saying he was armed and dangerous.

Crimo was apprehended at approximately 6:30 p.m., more than eight hours after the shooting began, after a brief pursuit.
