Henry Kissinger came to America as a political refugee fleeing Jewish persecution in Bavaria. He eventually became a naturalised citizen, and after serving in the army, he went on to become one of the most powerful politicians and advisers of the late twentieth century. He was a prominent figure in the implementation of US foreign policy during the administrations of Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.
After leaving US politics, Kissinger continued to serve in advisory capacities. He has a history of working with major corporations, and in 2009 he was paid $5 million to assist Rio Tinto in distancing itself from espionage and bribery allegations.
According to a 1979 New York Times article, Kissinger was already earning $400,000 – $600,000 per year from speaking fees, book royalties, and business consulting fees. That equates to $1.4 to $2.1 million per year today.

Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, he routinely charged between $15 and $20,000 for a single speaking engagement. That equates to $50,000 today. He reportedly earned around $5 million in advances and royalties from his three-part memoir, beginning with “The White House Years,” that same year. In today’s dollars, that equates to $18 million.
The Kissingers own real estate in both New York City and Connecticut. They previously owned an estate in Palm Springs, California, known as “The Henry Kissinger Estate” by realtors.
