He began playing football for the Virginia Cavaliers in college in 2001. At some point, Miller began playing tight end. He received the Consensus All-America honor in 2004 and the John Mackey Award over his three seasons with the squad. He made the choice to forfeit his NFL Draft eligibility. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the first round with the 30th overall choice in the 2005 NFL Draft.
