While the most famous case of conservatorship in recent years is that of Britney Spears, who has been under her father’s control since 2008, there have been other celebrities who have experienced similar situations. Here are some examples of famous men who have been under conservatorship:

• Brian Wilson: The Beach Boys’ singer and songwriter was placed under a conservatorship in the 1990s after years of treatment from a questionable psychologist. Dr. Eugene Landy had been hired by Brian’s wife in 1975 to help him deal with his drug abuse and mental health issues, but he ended up isolating him from his family and friends, controlling his medication, diet, music, and finances, and even co-writing songs with him. Brian’s family eventually sued Landy and won back his rights in 1992.
• Casey Kasem: The legendary radio host and voice actor was put under a conservatorship in 2013 after his wife Jean and his children from a previous marriage fought over his care. Kasem had been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, movement, and behavior. Jean moved him to various facilities and locations without informing his children, who accused her of neglecting and abusing him. A judge granted his daughter Kerri temporary conservatorship in 2014, but Jean continued to challenge it until Kasem’s death later that year.
• Mickey Rooney: The Hollywood icon was placed under a conservatorship in 2011 after he testified before Congress that he had been financially exploited and emotionally abused by his stepson Christopher Aber and his wife. Rooney claimed that they had taken control of his money, withheld food and medication, and prevented him from leaving his home. A judge granted Rooney’s lawyer temporary conservatorship and issued a restraining order against Aber. Rooney died in 2014 at the age of 93.
