In 2012, he tied for first place with Kristian Berki but lost out on gold due to a lower execution score, earning silver instead. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, he then won a second consecutive silver medal on the pommel horse, this time falling short of teammate and 2012 bronze medallist Max Whitlock. Smith competed for Great Britain on the male artistic team all-around team that won bronze at the 2012 London Olympics.
