Kansas assistant coach Kurtis Townsend and Kansas head coach Bill Self, were suspended after FBI investigations revealed that several basketball programs paid top recruits to attend their schools during the NCAA.

Assistant coach Norm Roberts will serve as acting coach for the team in the meantime.

Who Is Kurtis Townsend?

Kurtis Townsend is the present assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Kansas, under head coach Bill Self.

Born on December 13, 1957, in San Jose, California, Townsend’s playing career with the Western Kentucky lasted between 1978–1980.

He played college basketball as a point guard for Western Kentucky University, where he bagged a degree in recreation.

Townsend further played for Menlo Junior College in California, for two seasons; and another one season for the Montana Golden Nuggets of the CBA.

Townsend began coaching in 1993 with California and he ended up coaching the Eastern Kentucky, Michigan, USC, Miami, and now, Kansas.

He had coached his team to win the NCAA Tournament twice, in 2008 and 2022.
