Bono is an Irish singer-songwriter, activist, and philanthropist. On December 11, 2008, Bono was awarded the annual Man of Peace prize in Paris, France, by several Nobel Peace Prize laureates.

The noble prize was awarded to Bono for his efforts to combat poverty, debt and disease in Africa.

From September to October 1985, Bono and his wife Ali Hewson traveled to Africa on a humanitarian mission, spending a month at a feeding center in Ajibar, Ethiopia.

Together with other volunteers, they created an educational program comprised of songs and one-act plays to teach Ethiopian children important topics such as health and hygiene.

The trip was credited with igniting Bono’s interest in African issues, which would come to define his future philanthropic and activist efforts.

He co-founded DATA, EDUN, the ONE Campaign, and Product Red. In support of these causes, he has performed at benefit concerts and lobbied politicians and heads of state for assistance.

Bono and DATA were awarded the Philadelphia Liberty Medal for their humanitarian efforts on September 27 2007. While accepting the award, Bono stated, “You are not free when you are trapped by poverty. You are not free if trade laws prevent you from selling the food you grew.”
