Hans Modrow Arrested: What Did Hans Modrow Do?

In 1993, German politician, also known as “the last communist premier of East Germany”, Hans Modrow, was arrested over allegations bordering on electoral fraud and abuse of office.

Modrow had allegedly rigged the Dresden municipal elections in May 1989, by reducing the number of non-voters.

Although, Modrow pleaded guilty but stated that the trial was politically motivated. No fine or prison sentence was imposed on him initially, but in 1995, Modrow was sentenced to nine months on probation.

What Happened To Hans Modrow?

Modrow passed away on 11 February 2023. He was aged 95.

Modrow grew up in the province of Pomerania, Germany, and assumed office as the de facto leader of Germany between 1989 and 1990.

At the early part of his political career, Modrow served in different capacities for the Free German Youth (FDJ) in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg, and Berlin for a period of 11 years.

He was known to have joined forces during the communist regime, to cause delay in the German reunification.

Modrow was also an honorary chairman of the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS), as well as president of the “council of elders” of the Left Party.
