American football and baseball coach Hampton Smith died on October 2, 2023 (he was born on October 1, 1934). From 1971 to 1976 and again from 1982 to 1999, he held the position of head football coach at Albany State University in Albany, Georgia, where he amassed a 157-90-4 record.

Smith also served as Albany State’s baseball program’s head coach from 1981 to 1983, compiling a record of 46-37-1. In the years prior to being hired at Albany State in 1981, Smith coached high school football in the Mississippi towns of McComb and Prentiss.

He received a degree from Tennessee State University and a master’s from Mississippi Vocational College, which is now known as Mississippi Valley State University.
One day after turning 89, on October 2, 2023, Smith passed away.
